Combat Mechanics
Melee Attack Types
World of Warcraft combat distinguishes between two primary attack types:
- White (auto) attacks - Your character's automatic weapon swings
- Yellow (special) attacks - Abilities like Bloodthirst, Execute, and Heroic Strike
Key Difference: Yellow attacks cannot glance, making them more reliable for damage output against higher level targets.
Possible Attack Outcomes
When you attack a target, the following results are possible in order of priority:
Miss → Dodge → Parry → Glancing Blow → Block → Critical Strike → Hit
Miss Chance Mechanics
- Base 8% miss chance against mobs 3 levels higher (level 63 bosses)
- Miss probability depends on weapon skill and target level difference
- Dual wielding increases miss probability significantly
- Weapon skill of 305 reduces miss chance to 6% for special attacks
Glancing Blow Mechanics
Critical Information: Glancing blows are one of the most significant DPS losses for melee classes in Classic WoW.
- Occurs only against equal or higher level enemies
- 40% chance to glance against level 63 enemies with 300 weapon skill
- Glancing blows deal reduced damage (as low as 65% of maximum damage)
- Cannot critically hit
- Affects only white damage (auto attacks)
Weapon Skill Impact
Weapon skill is arguably the most important stat for melee DPS classes:
Benefits of Increased Weapon Skill
- Reduces miss chance - Each point above 300 = 0.04% less miss
- Reduces glancing blow damage penalty - Higher skill = less damage reduction
- Reduces target dodge chance - Marginal but measurable improvement
- Reduces target parry chance - Prevents parry-haste acceleration
Optimal Weapon Skill Breakpoints
- 305 weapon skill - Critical breakpoint for raid bosses
- 308+ weapon skill - Diminishing returns, glancing damage cap reached
- Racial bonuses - Human/Orc/Troll racial weapon skills are extremely valuable
Critical Strike Cap
The critical strike cap is calculated by subtracting all avoidance mechanisms:
Crit Cap = 100% - Miss% - Dodge% - Block% - Parry% - Glancing%
- Increases with better gear and world buffs
- Varies significantly based on weapon skill and hit rating
- Different for white attacks vs yellow attacks
Flurry Mechanics
Flurry Talent: 5-point talent increasing attack speed by 30% for 3 swings after a critical hit.
- Critical strike chance does not directly translate to 100% uptime
- Multiple crits while Flurry is active do not stack or refresh duration
- Diminishing returns on critical strike chance for flurry uptime
- Extremely valuable for sustained DPS increase
