Threat Overview - Classic WoW
Threat Generation Basics
Threat is the underlying mechanic that determines which player a mob will attack. Understanding threat generation is crucial for successful group and raid encounters.
- Damage generates threat at a 1:1 ratio - 100 damage = 100 threat
- Healing generates threat at a 1:0.25 ratio - 100 healing = 25 threat (no overhealing)
- Resource gains generate threat differently:
- Mana: 1:0.5 ratio (100 mana = 50 threat)
- Rage: 5:1 ratio (50 rage = 250 threat, static unmodified)
- Energy: 5:1 ratio
Warrior Threat Mechanics
Warriors have unique threat generation mechanics based on their stance:
- Defensive Stance: 130% base threat (149.5% with 5/5 Defiance talent)
- Battle/Berserker Stances: 80% base threat
Warrior Threat-Generating Abilities
| Ability | Base Threat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sunder Armor (Rank 5) | 260 threat | Stacks up to 5 times, reduces armor |
| Shield Slam (Rank 4) | 250 threat | Requires shield, dispels magic effect |
| Revenge (Rank 5) | 315 threat | Only usable after dodge/parry/block |
| Heroic Strike (Rank 9) | 175 threat | Next melee attack, prevents dual-wield miss |
Threat Reduction Modifiers
Several abilities and effects can reduce threat generation:
- Blessing of Salvation (Paladin): Reduces all threat by 30%
- Tranquil Air Totem (Shaman): Reduces party threat by 20%
- Feint (Rogue): Reduces threat temporarily
- Fade (Priest): Reduces threat temporarily
Key Principle: "Threat is a damage ceiling - the higher a tank's TPS is, the higher a party/raid's DPS can be."
Threat Management Strategy
- Tanks should focus on maximizing threat per second (TPS)
- DPS players need to monitor their threat relative to the tank
- Melee DPS need 110% of tank threat to pull aggro
- Ranged DPS need 130% of tank threat to pull aggro
- Use threat reduction abilities when approaching the threat ceiling
